Can you ride a robotaxi if you use a wheelchair?

Waymo's help center says wheelchair-accessible vehicle service is for people who cannot ride in its fully autonomous cars because of a disability that affects how they move, and that those vehicles are driven manually. Putting a folded wheelchair in a driverless car's trunk is a separate option, with sizes Waymo publishes. The Tesla rider-rules PDF we downloaded on Nov 2, 2026 does not describe a wheelchair-accessible vehicle. Utah has no robotaxi service.

Waymo's wheelchair-accessible vehicles

From Waymo's help page "Wheelchair-accessible vehicles," fetched Nov 2, 2026. The page is undated.

  • Waymo says WAV service is for people who cannot ride in its fully autonomous cars because of a disability that affects how they move.
  • Waymo says riders 18 or older can request or be directed to WAVs that are "driven manually."
  • San Francisco and Los Angeles: in the app, tap Account, then Accessibility, turn on Wheelchair-accessible vehicle, and request the trip.
  • Phoenix: Waymo says to call Support from the Accessibility screen and they will order a WAV.
  • Las Vegas: the page tells riders to call Nellis Cab at (702) 248-1111, Deluxe Cab at (702) 568-7700, or Western Cab Company at (702) 736-8000.
  • San Diego: Happy2Help Transportation at (619) 885-3737, or Facilitating Access to Coordinated Transportation (FACT) at (888) 924-3228.
  • Waymo says drivers can help you enter and exit, secure your chair and you, and drive you to your destination. Waymo says they cannot help for long periods outside the car, such as walking you into a hospital and signing you in.

Waymo's accessibility-features page says the same thing in short form: "WAVs are manually driven, not autonomous."

So a Waymo WAV trip, as Waymo describes it, has a human driver. It is not a driverless ride.

A folded chair in the trunk is not a WAV

Waymo's trunk help page, fetched Nov 2, 2026, says the trunk can fit one folded wheelchair:

  • I-PACE: max 42 x 12.5 x 36 inches
  • Ojai: 11.5 x 29.5 x 29 inches

In that case you move from your chair to a car seat, and the folded chair rides in the trunk. Waymo's WAV page is the page that describes riding while a driver secures the chair. The trunk page is the page that describes a folded chair as cargo.

What AmeriDisability reports

A staff article on AmeriDisability (Oct 31, 2026) looks at Waymo from riders' point of view. These are AmeriDisability's statements, not Waymo policy:

  • It describes blind and low-vision access as a strong fit, including screen-reader support in the app.
  • In its table, a manual wheelchair user whose chair folds can ride "with transfer," folding and storing the chair. For a power wheelchair user, the answer is "Not yet," because current vehicles cannot accommodate non-folding power chairs.
  • It writes that no commercial self-driving fleet has automated wheelchair securement, and that where accessible vehicles exist, a person has to help with boarding and securing the chair.
  • It quotes a rider on step height as a practical problem when getting in.

Tesla

Not a Tesla App reported on Oct 30, 2026 that Tesla added accessibility features to its Robotaxi app: an improved vehicle-locating arrow, haptic feedback to help riders find the car, and music controls that work with a screen reader. Those are app features, not a wheelchair-accessible vehicle.

Tesla's Robotaxi Rider Rules PDF, downloaded Nov 2, 2026, does not describe a wheelchair-accessible vehicle. A direct request to tesla.com that day returned 403, so this page does not claim we opened every Tesla URL.

Utah

As of Nov 2, 2026, Utah has no public robotaxi service. UTA's comments on driverless transit are on the Utah status page. That note is about public transit, not a private robotaxi accessibility plan.

If a service does come to Utah, riders will likely ask whether wheelchair users get the same service or a separate, human-driven one, and whether a power chair can ride. No company page we checked has answered those questions for Utah.
