How many miles and cars do Tesla Robotaxi and Waymo run?

The two companies do not measure the same thing, so a single "who's bigger" answer does not hold up. Electrek (Fred Lambert, Oct 27, 2026) reports that Tesla logged 438,000 miles with no safety monitor aboard in Austin in the week ending Oct 18, 2026. Electrek says Waymo's Austin weekly average in the second quarter was about 406,000, and that Waymo's national weekly average in Q2 2026 was 3.90 million rider-only miles. A car on the Texas registry is not necessarily giving rides. Utah has no robotaxi service.

The units do not match
Electrek (Oct 27, 2026) calls Tesla's numbers driverless miles, and it also describes the Austin Tesla figure as miles with no safety monitor aboard. It calls Waymo's national and cumulative figures rider-only miles. Those are different labels. Electrek's article does not say whether Tesla's driverless miles include empty trips between rides. We will not guess. If you are asking whether a passenger was aboard, the published labels do not settle it.
The time periods do not match either. Tesla's Austin number, as Electrek reports it, is one week. Waymo's Austin number is an average for the second quarter. Electrek says the Waymo figure is about four months old because Waymo publishes its data after the quarter ends.
The miles, as Electrek reports them
Electrek says the chart comes from Robotaxi Tracker, a community project that pulls mileage from company reports. All figures in this table are Electrek's, Oct 27, 2026, fetched Nov 2, 2026.

Electrek also reports that Austin accounts for 79% of Tesla's weekly driverless miles.
Electrek writes that Elon Musk says the race "was never a real contest." That is Electrek's report of Musk's claim, not a finding. One Austin week is not a national lead. Electrek says that across the US, Waymo still drives about seven times more miles per week.
Registered cars are not cars in service
Texas keeps a state list of registered automated vehicles. A VIN on the list is not a car giving rides, and the list does not show which city a car runs in.
Snapshot reported as Oct 31, 2026. TeslaNorth (Nov 1, 2026) says that on the October 31 snapshot, Waymo had 1,259 vehicles, Tesla had 1,204 (631 Model Y and 573 Cybercab), Avride had 344, and Zoox had 63. TeslaNorth also says October 27 records showed 1,051 Tesla vehicles. Drive Tesla Canada (Nov 1, 2026) reports the same 1,204 Tesla count and an earlier total of 1,080. Drive Tesla Canada notes that not every registered vehicle goes into service right away.
Morning of Nov 2, 2026. TeslAnt reports Tesla at 1,244 vehicles on the list: 671 Model Y and 573 Cybercab, after 40 Model Ys were added on Nov 1. TeslAnt says the list covers the whole state and does not show where a car operates. This site's own TxDMV public-list read on Nov 2, 2026 counted the same 1,244 (671 Model Y and 573 Cybercab-prefix). That read is authorization, not active rides. It is written up on the NHTSA note. The Oct 31 figures above are earlier counts on the same kind of list, not a conflict with the Nov 2 read.
Where Waymo is adding service
Waymo's Oct 27, 2026 post says that over the next week it is adding nearly 250 square miles across Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Utah is not on that list. The post is about service area, not miles driven.

FAQ
Did Tesla pass Waymo in Austin?
For one week, Electrek (Oct 27, 2026) says Tesla reported 438,000 miles with no safety monitor aboard in Austin in the week ending Oct 18, 2026, above Waymo's Austin weekly average of about 406,000 in the second quarter. Electrek says that compares Tesla's latest week with an older Waymo average. Nationally, Electrek says Waymo still drives about seven times more miles per week.
Are the miles with a passenger aboard?
Electrek labels Waymo's national figure as rider-only miles and Tesla's figure as miles with no safety monitor aboard, which it also calls driverless miles. Electrek's article does not say whether Tesla's figure includes empty trips. We do not treat the two labels as the same thing.
How many Tesla robotaxis are in Texas?
As of the morning of Nov 2, 2026, TeslAnt reports 1,244 Tesla vehicles on the Texas automated-vehicle list (671 Model Y and 573 Cybercab). This site's own TxDMV public-list read that morning counted the same 1,244. That is a registration count, not the number of cars giving rides.
Does a registry count mean the car is giving rides?
No. The list shows vehicles registered with the state. It does not show which city a car runs in or whether it is carrying riders.
Is either company in Utah?
No. As of Nov 2, 2026, neither Tesla nor Waymo runs public robotaxi service in Utah.
